가부장적 사회와 시선에 저항하며 비인간 존재와의 공생과 연대를 강조해온 여성주의 미술의 대표 작가 홍이현숙, 강정 해군기지 건설에 맞서 연산호 기록을 이어온 평화 활동가 최혜영, 페미니즘, 퀴어, 그리고 아직 알려지지 않은 타자의 관점에서 연결과 소통을 이어온 시각 문화 비평가 이연숙(리타)이 모여 각자 몸담고 있는 ‘우리’의 범위와 경계를 넘나드는 방법을 나눈다.

8월 19일(토) 언러닝스페이스의 기획 전시와 프로그램 ⟪우징: 섬 안의 섬⟫의 연계행사로 이유진 작가님의 커뮤니티 드로잉 워크숍 <스며듦-스며나옴>을 진행합니다.

이 워크숍에서는 불경에 나오는 여섯 가지 경계인 색성향미촉법(色聲香味觸法) 즉, 모양, 소리, 향기, 맛, 부딪힘, 그리고 의식을 통해 습(濕, 젖을 습/축축함) 혹은 습기(習氣, 습관으로 형성된 기질)처럼 서로에게 스며드는 시간을 가집니다.

🐚워크숍 시작 시간부터 108분 동안은 침묵 상태에서 드로잉을 중심으로 서로 연결되는 경험을 만들어갈 예정입니다.

🐚 워크숍 결과물은 추후 작가가 참여하는 제주도립미술관 전시 <이주하는 인간_호모 미그라티오>에 함께 직조되어 놓일 예정입니다.

이유진 작가는 관계맺기를 중심으로 일어나는 예술을 실험하며 “예술 말고 친구를 만들자”라는 슬로건을 실천 중인 시각 예술가이자 협력자입니다. 미국 코넬대학교에서 순수미술 학사를 뉴욕 컬럼비아대학교 예술대학원에서 시각예술 석사를 졸업했습니다. 2018년 뉴욕에서 제주도로 이주하면서 옛 농가를 수리해 마련한 주거지이자 창작 공간인 ‘미술관옆집'을 운영하고 있습니다. 이유진은 닭과 개, 텃밭이 있는 시골집에서 국내외 창작자들과 함께 삶과 예술의 불가분적 관계, 그리고 생태적 사고를 통한 창작을 논하고 실험하는 독특한 아티스트 레지던시를 운영하고 있습니다.

Unlearning Space is hosting a community drawing workshop <Ooze in / Ooze out> with artist Yujin Lee, as part of the program series of ⟪Oozing 雨徵: Islands in Islands⟫.
In this workshop, we will experience 108 minutes of silence exploring six spheres mentioned in Buddhist scriptures: color, sound, scent, taste, touch, and object of mind. Through these perceptual spheres, we ooze into and out of each other, much like 습 ‘seup’, a homonym for moisture and disposition formed by habits.

🐚For the 108 minutes from the start of the workshop, we will maintain a state of silence and focus on creating an interconnected experience through drawing.

🐚The workshop's outcome will be woven together by the artist and exhibited at the Jeju Museum of Art as part of the exhibition Migrating Human_Homo Migratio.

워크숍 소개

  이 워크숍에서 참여자들은 둘씩 짝을 이루며 팔, 다리 혹은 등이 붙어있는 옷을 입고 함께 여러 활동을 진행하며 몸, 경계, 협력에 대해 배웁니다. 6~10세 사이의 참여자들은 자신과 비슷한 체격의 아이와 함께 짝을 이루며 몸이 연결된 옷을 입고 함께 걷기, 바닥에 놓인 캔버스 천 위에 누워서 몸을 따라 그리기, 다양한 색채 도구를 사용하여 표현하기, 걸으며 채집한 것들을 활용하여 풍경을 만들기 등을 수행합니다.

  이 통해 기술화되는 세계에서 고립감을 벗어나 스스로의 몸을 활용하며 친밀감과 협력을 통해 몸의 언어를 표현하는 것을 배울 수 있습니다. 참여자들은 자기 자신의 몸을 확인하고, 나와 다른 존재를 인식하고, 불편함 속에서 함께 친밀감을 쌓고 협력하며, 경계를 무너뜨리는 방법을 스스로 찾게 될 것입니다.

작가 소개

워크숍을 진행하는 정혜정 작가는 홍익대 회화과, 한국예술종합학교 조형예술과를 전공하고 미술작가로 활동 중입니다. 드로잉, 영상, 설치, 상황에의 개입 등 다양한 매체를 통해 익숙한 것의 틈과 균열을 발견하는 작업을 해오고 있습니다. 최근에는 3D컴퓨터 그래픽 기술을 토대로 가상현실로 시공간을 확장시키며, 생태학과 미디어아트의 교차점을 그리는 것에 집중하고 있습니다. 이번 기획전시⟪우징: 섬 안의 섬⟫에 <엄마는 내가 태어났을 때 어땠어(2022)>, <액체인간(2021)>으로  함께 참여하였습니다.

9월에는 ‘제주’라는 장소성을 주제로 하여 토크와 스크리닝으로 이루어진 프로그램을 진행합니다.

*본 프로그램은 언러닝스페이스의 스토리 아카이브 프로젝트 <고이화 할머니의 여정>과도 밀접하게 관련되어 있습니다. <고이화 할머니의 여정>은 언러닝스페이스가 자리 잡은 제주 하도의 유명한 해녀인 고이화 해녀의 삶을 다층적으로 기억해 보는 아카이브 프로젝트입니다. 그를 기억하는 해녀들과 친지들을 초청하여 그녀가 남긴 물건과 영상을 매개로 하여 다양한 이야기들을 나누고, 이렇게 수집한 이야기들을 어떻게 기록할 수 있을지 고민해 보는 시간을 마련할 예정입니다.  

🌋 5PM 토크 <제주로의 여정>

제주로의 여정은 우리의 삶에 어떤 의미를 가질까요? 

제주 해녀가 제주도를 벗어나 물질하는 것을 ‘바깥 물질’이라 하는 데, 고이화 해녀 역시, 제주를 떠나 여러 곳에서 여러 가지 이유로 장기간 물질을 하다 다시 제주로 돌아왔다고 합니다. 오늘날에는 다양한 삶의 방식을 고민하고 모색하는 육지 사람들이 제주에 매료되어 이곳을 찾고 있고, 서울-제주 노선을 오가는 비행기들은 하루에도 4만 명이 넘는 단기 여행자들을 쏟아냅니다. 

언러닝스페이스도 제주에 거주하는 분들, 한 달 살기를 하시는 분, 그리고 잠깐이지만 자신만의 시간을 갖고자 들러 가시는 분까지 다양한 분들을 맞이하고 떠나보내고 있습니다. 언러닝스페이스는 이러한 과정을 지켜보며 제주를 여행하는 사람들과 이곳에 거주하는 사람들을 어떻게 연결할 수 있을지, 공동체 안과 밖에 어떤 방식으로 기여할 수 있을지 고민해 왔습니다. 

이번 토크 프로그램에서는 먼저 고이화 해녀의 아카이빙 결과물을 공유하고, 제주와 발리를 오가며 아시아 여성의 여행에 대해 연구하시는 박소현 선생님을 초청하여 여성의 삶에서 여행이 어떤 역할을 하는지와 제주가 육지와 어떠한 관계를 맺어 왔으며, 제주에서 여행이 가지는 의미는 무엇인지를 들어보려 합니다. 제주, 오키나와, 필리핀, 하와이 등 섬을 여행하며 그곳에 담긴 역사적 아픔들을 영상 작품에 담아온 나미나 작가는 외지인으로서 예술가가 공동체의 삶에 관계 맺는 방식에 대해서 함께 고민해 주실 예정입니다.

박소현
인도네시아와 싱가포르에서 인도네시아어와 동남아시아학을 공부했다. 『갈색의 세계사』, 『페소아의 리스본』, 『대항해시대의 동남아시아』등을 번역하고 『비동맹 독본』을 함께 엮었다. 『다양한 문화의 끝판왕, 동남아시아』를 썼고 아시아 여성의 여행기와 여성의 아시아 여행기에 관한 책을 써보려 한다. 

나미나
무관심 속에서 벌어지는 폭력을 시각화하는 작업을 하고 있다. 오랜 기간 해온 시리즈 <섬들의 연대 Inter-island Solidarity Series> 작업을 통해 무관심 속에서 벌어지는 사회적 폭력이 다시 본인에게 향하여 내 기억에서조차 잊혔던 상처의 틈을 발견하는 계기가 됐다. 개인의 상처와 성찰을 담은 최근 작업 <호쿠 hōkū>와 <무브 온 move on>에서 개인의 상황을 온전하게 보여줌으로써 새로운 변화의 가능성을 가늠해 보았다. 현재는 작업을 위한 견뎌내기를 다시 해보리라 생각하고 있다.

요이
시각 언어로 작업하는 티칭 아티스트, 디자이너, 작가다. 작년 제주로 이주하면서부터, 온라인으로는 뉴욕, 서울, 암스테르담, 코펜하겐 등 다양한 문화적 환경에 있는 사람들과 협업하며, 제주에서는 언러닝스페이스를 만들고 있다. 머리와 마음, 그리고 손을 연결하는 예술 돌봄 교육에 대해 관심을 갖고, 한 사람의 모습과 정체성의 이야기를 개인적, 사회적, 생태학적인 관점에서 다차원적이고 유기적으로 풀어나가는 방법에 대해 연구한다.

이은수
서울과 제주를 오가며 전시기획자와 연구자로 활동하고 있다. 언러닝스페이스에서 토크와 스크리닝으로 이루어진 예술 연구 프로그램 ‘물, 제주, 여성’을 기획하고 있으며, 하이드로 페미니즘 북클럽에도 참여했다. 역사의 공식적인 기록과 개인적 기억 사이의 관계에 주목하며, 특히 여성의 목소리를 다루는 데에 지속적으로 관심을 기울여 왔다. 전시 <지워진 얼굴들>(2020)을 기획했으며, 영국에서 다큐멘터리 이론을 공부했다.

토크에 이어지는 스크리닝 프로그램에서는 제주의 역사와 이주에 관련된 영화 <메이 제주 데이>(2021), <작년에 봤던 새>(2020) 두 편을 상영합니다.

단편 애니메이션 <메이 제주 데이>에서는 제주 4.3을 겪으신 분들이 직접 그림을 그려 자신의 경험을 들려줍니다. 개인적 경험을 통해 국가적 사건을 담담하게 풀어낸 작품입니다.

📌 <작년에 봤던 새> 이다영 감독 / 30min / Drama
<작년에 봤던 새>에서는 자신이 운영하던 카페가 있던 마을이 제주 제2공항의 부지로 선정되면서 어쩔 수 없이 카페를 처분해야 할 상황에 처하게 된 양수와, 새로운 일자리를 구해야 하는 청각장애를 가진 직원 선재가 겪는 변화를 다루고 있습니다.  

이번 토크와 스크리닝 프로그램을 통해 다양한 이유로 제주에 온 분들과 함께 제주를 둘러싼 여정이 우리의 삶에 어떤 의미를 가질지, 그리고 그 여정을 잘 해내기 위해서 여행자로서, 그리고 그 여행자를 맞이하는 사람으로서 우리는 무엇을 알고 무엇을 ‘언러닝'해야 할지 함께 생각해 볼 수 있기를 기대합니다.

* This program is also closely related to <Grandmother Go Ihwa's Journey>, an archive project that multi-layered memories of the life of Go Ihwa Haenyeo, a famous haenyeo in Hado, Jeju, whose house Unlearning Space is based on. We plan to invite the haenyeos who remember her to share various stories connecting the objects and images she left behind and think about how to archive the stories collected.

🌋 5PM Talk <Journey to Jeju>

What does the journey to Jeju mean to our lives?

Jeju Haenyeos often left their original base in search of a sufficient quantity of seafood and sought out other provinces in Korea, as well as internationally–so as Grandmother Go Ihwa. Today, people on the mainland fascinated by Jeju come to the island seeking different ways of living, while flights between Seoul and Jeju pour in more than 40,000 short-term travelers a day.

UNLEARNING SPACE has also been welcoming a variety of people, including those who live in Jeju, those who want to live here for a month, and those who stop by to spend their own time. While observing all kinds of journeys, UNLEARNING SPACE has been contemplating how to connect the people who travel to Jeju and the people who live here, and how to contribute inside and outside the community.

In this talk, we will first share the archiving results of the Go Ihwa haenyeo. We invited two guests—Park Sohyun, who researches Asian women’s travel, to learn about the role of travel in women’s lives, the historical relationship between Jeju and the mainland, and the meaning of travel in Jeju. Na Meena, who has traveled to islands such as Jeju, Okinawa, the Philippines, and Hawaii and captured the historical pains contained therein in her video works, will be discussing together the way artists relate to the life of the community as an outsider.

Park Sohyun
Park Sohyun studied Indonesian language and received a degree in Southeast Asian Studies in Indonesia and Singapore. She translated The Darker Nations: A People's History of the Third World and Lisbon: What the Tourist Should See, and co-edited Non-Aligned Movement: A Reader. She is the author of Southeast Asia: A Melting Pot of Various Cultures, and currently, she is writing a book about the travel of Asian Women and Women's trip to Asia.

Na Meena
Na meena's artworks visualize the violence committed amidst our neglect. In creating the Inter-island Solidarity Series, she came to acknowledge that she was also a victim of social violence and discovered the wound she had been ignoring. Through her most recent works, hōkū and move on, she searches for a new possibility for change by reflecting on herself and revealing her circumstance as it is. She is currently attempting to resume her artistic career, which is a synonym for endurance.

Yo-E Ryou
Yo-E Ryou is an artist and founding director of Unlearning Space. After working and studying outside of Korea for a decade, Yo-E relocated to Jeju last year and started learning how to swim, surf, and breathe differently. She is interested in art and design education that brings touches head, hands, and heart, to guide us speak up about what we are really interested in and who we are in relation to our natural, sociocultural and political surroundings.

Yi Eunsoo
Yi Eunsoo is a curator, writer, and researcher based in Seoul. This year, she co-curated an artistic research program, Water, Womxn, Jeju Island, at Unlearning Space. Through her exhibition Effaced Faces(2020), she explored the distorted relationship between the official history and personal memories of Korean women after the Korean War. Her research interests include the intersection of history and memories of social and political minorities expressed through visual languages. She studied Documentary Theory at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London.

Following the talk, two films related to the history and migration of Jeju, <May Jeju Day>(2021) and <The Bird I Saw Last Year>(2020), will be screened.

📌 <May Jeju Day> Kang Hee-jin / 14min / Animation
In the short animation <May Jeju Day>, people who experienced Jeju 4.3 Massacre draw images while telling their experiences. The film calmly unravels national events through personal experience.

📌 <The Bird I Saw Last Year> Da-Young Lee / 30min / Drama
The village where Yang-soo runs a cafe is selected as the site for Jeju 2nd Airport. She is forced to relocate, while Seon-jae, a deaf employee, has to find a new job.

In this talk and screening program, together with guests and audiences who settled in Jeju for different reasons, we hope to discuss what we should learn and unlearn as travelers of Jeju and hosts who welcome them to Jeju.
